The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for emergency situations by increasing heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure, while also decreasing digestion and other functions that are not critical in a crisis. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system returns the body to a state of rest and recovery by slowing down the heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure, while increasing digestion and other functions.
The nervous system is protected by three layers of meninges, which are membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord is a long, delicate structure that extends from the brain down the center of the vertebral column. It serves as the main communication pathway between the brain and the rest of the body, transmitting information between the CNS and the PNS.
The nerves of the PNS are composed of axons, which are long, thin fibers that transmit electrical signals, and myelin, a fatty substance that insulates the axons and speeds up the transmission of signals. In addition to neurons and myelin, the PNS also contains supportive cells called glia, which provide nutrition and protection to the neurons.
