NUTRITION 5.1 WHAT ARE LIFE PROCESSES Life processes are basic processes that living organisms perform to maintain their existence. Examples include nutrition, respiration, circulation, excretion, locomotion, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli. 5.2 NUTRITION Nutrition is the process by which living organisms obtain energy and essential nutrients for the growth, maintenance, and repair of body tissues. Nutrition can be classified into two types: autotrophic and heterotrophic. 5.2.1 Autotrophic Nutrition Autotrophic nutrition is the mode of nutrition in which organisms produce their food from inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide and water, using energy from sunlight. Photosynthesis is the process by which autotrophs carry out this type of nutrition. Autotrophs use photosynthesis to fulfill their carbon and energy requirements by converting carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll.
